Unusual Designer Grapes: Ones That Taste Like Cotton Candy & Super Elongated ‘Witch Fingers’

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 05:30 PM PDT

Freaky Grapes

Witch Fingers

Redditor pocketmole recently picked up some unusually elongated grapes at a Texas grocery store. Redditor Farmertmi, a UK grape technologist who “who travels the world sourcing grapes for the major supermarkets,” commented on the grapes and said, “These grapes are called Witches fingers and are from the Californian breeding program International Fruit Genetics. Although it sounds like it could be GMO it’s not, they are made through the hybridisation process of taking pollen from one plant and brushing it onto another plant,” and furthered, ” There are quite a number of these varieties now, in different colours as well. What’s really interesting is that IFG also have a few other unusual varieties such as ‘cotton candy’ which when ripe acquires the taste of cotton candy – it’s very unusual but also delicious…” Los Angeles Times quotes California-based fruit breeder and head of research at IFG, David Cain, who states why he created these super-sweet hybrid cotton candy-flavored grapes, “We’re competing against candy bars and cookies.” Both varieties of designer grapes will be available soon in high-end U.S. supermarkets.

Bad Chemistry, Chemical Diagrams Break Down Characters From ‘Breaking Bad’

The creative folks at Shutterstock have made “Bad Chemistry,” a series of chemical diagrams that break down the characteristics of individual characters from Breaking Bad. You can view more diagrams from this collection, which were created “using assets from the Shutterstock library,” at The Shutterstock Blog.

Part two of Breaking Bad's final season kicks off in just a few days, and we're growing increasingly anxious, wondering where the end will take us. For four-and-a-half seasons, we've watched the characters grow and change, with no transformation as significant as Walter White's own personal journey from meek and innocent to ruthless and evil. Years of watching Breaking Bad has taught us which chemical elements combine to make meth, and now, as we await the show's denouement, we decided to break down the characters in the same way.

Decadent 12-Course Meal in a Can

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 04:07 PM PDT

12-Course Meal in a Can by Chris Godfrey

As a commentary on gimmickry in contemporary culture, designer Chris Godfrey created a 12-course meal in a can featuring such delicacies as “pickled kobe beef with charred strawberry” and “Halibut poached in truffle butter in a coconut crepe.” Yum!

Contempary culture means on every trip into town; you're bombarded with gimmicks galore. Gimmicks often diminish their products to turn a profit; downgrading on the content but selling you something thats '50% more'. The All in One 12 course meal offers the average Joe; the chance to dine like royalty without the washing up.

Petition Calls for San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge To Be Named After Emperor Norton

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 03:38 PM PDT

Bay Bridge

San Francisco-based writer John Lumea has launched a Change.org petition to rename the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge the “Emperor Norton Bay Bridge,” after the 19th century San Francisco eccentric and self-proclaimed “Emperor of the United States,” Joshua Abraham Norton. Emperor Norton issued many imperial decrees over the years, including a rather farsighted proclamation demanding that a bridge and tunnel be built between Oakland and San Francisco (the Bay Bridge and Transbay Tube now connect the two cities). It’s not the first time someone has proposed naming the bridge after Norton—a 2004 proposal was approved by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors before fizzling.

Titanic Gravy Boat

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 01:57 PM PDT

Titanic Gravy Boat

Inspired by the Barfing Squirrel gravy boat we posted about last year, the folks at Archie McPhee created the Titanic Gravy Boat. This ingenious boat-shaped gravy boat pours out through its hull and “acknowledges something we all know—most holiday meals are a disaster.” It’s available to purchase at their site.

The Titanic Gravy Boat brings one of the most famous maritime tragedies of all time to your dinner table. This ceramic representation of the Titanic is 9″ x 4-3/4″ and holds 16 fl. oz. of gravy which can be poured through the hole in the hull. Also, it can be used to stage a historical reenactment if your relatives start talking politics. As soon as someone starts quoting radio show hosts, you just use mashed potatoes as the iceberg and peas as the life boats.

David Wahl hilariously demonstrates the boat in action:

It’s being reported that this new creation is being called the “new Cronut.”
